Zamfara govt. delivers on promise, begins payment of N13.4b gratuities to retirees

The Zamfara State government has begun delivering on its promise to retirees, initiating the payment of a staggering N13.4 billion in outstanding gratuities. This significant move aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by former civil servants who have long awaited their rightful due.

Governor Dauda Lawal established a dedicated committee to meticulously verify and authenticate data submitted by retirees, ensuring transparency and accuracy in the disbursement process. The committee’s efforts revealed a total accumulated debt of N13.4 billion, encompassing state and local government gratuities dating back to 2011.

Following the comprehensive data validation, the government commenced gratuity payments to eligible retirees last Thursday. This positive step marks the culmination of a concerted effort to address the longstanding financial hardship faced by many retired civil servants.

“The Zamfara State government is fulfilling its promise to serve the people of Zamfara by rescuing and rebuilding the state for the better,” declared Governor Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, in a statement made available to The Guardian.

The statement underscores the government’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of its citizens and ensuring a just and equitable society.

The statement added that the ongoing disbursement process signifies a crucial step towards financial relief for retirees, empowering them to lead more secure and dignified lives. The initiative, it added, also serves as a testament to the Zamfara State government’s dedication to responsible financial management and its commitment to honouring its obligations to its citizens.
