YPP Abia Assembly members decamp to LP

Delta Assembly suspends member
The membership base of the Labour Party (LP) in the Abia State House of Assembly has increased following the defection of the two members of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) yesterday.

The development now brings the LP members in the House to 12, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains 11. But when Aaron Uzodike of the PDP, who was declared winner by the Appeal Court on November 27, 2023, in the March 18 Aba North Constituency election, is inaugurated, the House will comprise All Progressives Congress (APC) one member, LP 11 and PDP 12.

Uzodike has been denied inauguration by the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, who allegedly hinged his refusal to inaugurate the Uzodike on ‘order from above.’

The two YPP defectors were Iheanacho Nwogu, representing Osisioma North State Constituency, and Fine Ahuama, representing Osisioma South State Constituency. They have said that leaving their former party was to enable them to join the state ruling party, which has Dr Alex Otti as the governor, and to make democracy deeper at the grassroots for the benefit of their constituents.

Speaking on Tuesday night, while on a courtesy visit to the governor, at the Government House, Umuahia, the duo two led by the House Majority Leader, Uchenna Okoro, representing Arochukwu State Constituency on the platform of LP, predicted that their constituencies would now enjoy more democracy dividends.

They informed the governor that they had earlier, during plenary on Tuesday, announced their defection into the LP, partly because of Otti’s monumental achievements in office.

They specifically cited the taking off of the Geometric Power Plant and several road projects that the governor had executed in their constituencies in Osisioma, as well as the recent flag-off of Osisioma-Ekeakpara Road, describing the road as one of Otti’s signature projects in their constituency.

IN another development, the Delta State House of Assembly, yesterday, suspended the member representing Ughelli North 1 Constituency, Matthew Omonade, for alleged gross misconduct for 14 legislative days.

The suspension order, which was officially announced by the Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor, was preceded by a motion raised on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader, Emeka Nwaobi, Aniocha North.

In the motion, which was supported by the Chief Whip of the House, Perkins Umukoro, Sapele, and unanimously adopted by the House, the suspended lawmaker was alleged to have willfully and falsely perverted the proceedings of the House on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
