Why People Like My Music – Timi Dakolo

Popular singer and songwriter, Timi Dakolo, has revealed why he thinks people love his music and also his philosophy of creating music.

He disclosed this on the podcast Afrobeats Intelligence.

Dakolo explained that his primary rule in music is to create for himself first.

“For me, you make music for yourself because the food you want to give someone, you must be able to enjoy it yourself,” he said.

He noted that if an artiste loves his work, fans will naturally follow.

Dakolo stressed that genuine artistry involves creating something meaningful to oneself, which in turn draws others.

“The first person to encounter your idea is you. If you’re doing it for people, then you’re missing the whole point. A good product convinces the people; it speaks louder than asking people to come and hear your music,” Dakolo said.

He said that a good product speaks for itself, and attempting to cater solely to others’ tastes can dilute artistic expression.

“If you’re doing it for people then you are missing the whole point. A good product convinces the people. It speaks louder than asking people to come and hear your music. If the product is good people will embrace it.”
