Vandal electrocuted while stealing power cables in Enugu

A suspected vandal was on Friday electrocuted when he broke into a distribution transformer of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) at the Coal Camp area of the state.

The Guardian gathered that the deceased had attempted to vandalise some of the power cables in the transformer during a power seizure.

Luck, however, ran against him during the vandalisation of the armoured cables as power was restored and he was electrocuted.

His mangled body and some already cut cables were discovered side by side by the transformer on Friday morning.

EEDC’s Head of Communication,Emeka Eze, confirmed the development.

He said “the lifeless body of the yet to be identified vandal suspect was found within the space of a distribution transformer belonging to the company,” adding that “from all indications, it is presumed that power supply must have been restored while the deceased was cutting the armoured cables, which resulted in him being electrocuted”

Ezeh, who described the incident as tragic and very unfortunate, lamented the increasing rate at which vandals attack electricity installations within EEDC’s network daily.

“This is a development that has adversely impacted not just the quality of service to its customers but also its revenue”, he said

He further said that vandalism has become a big challenge to the company, stressing that there is no way it can be addressed without the support of critical stakeholders.

“It is a battle we all have to fight collectively because once these transformers are vandalised, customers who are served by the installation will be greatly affected,” Ezeh said.

He therefore appealed to customers to join hands with the company to ensure that these facilities within their neighbourhoods are protected.
