President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate lifting of financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Niger and Guinea.

Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale made this known in a press statement on Wednesday.

“Closure of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic, as well as ECOWAS no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger Republic, has been ordered to be lifted,” said Ngelale.

“Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger, as well as a freeze of all service transactions, including utility services and electricity to the Niger Republic.

“Freeze of assets of the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks and freeze of assets of the Republic of Niger, state enterprises, and parastatals in commercial banks.”

Ngelale said Tinubu has also ordered that the suspension of Niger from all financial assistance and transactions with all financial institutions, particularly EBID and BOAD should be lifted.

The President has also directed that the travel bans imposed on the government officials of the Niger Republic and their family members should be lifted.

Several sanctions were imposed on the Republic of Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) last year following the coup which brought in the military junta.

The coup d’état in Niger occurred on 26 July 2023 when the country’s presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum.

Presidential Guard commander, General Abdourahamane Tchiani thereafter proclaimed himself as the leader of a new military junta, shortly after he had confirmed the coup to be a success.
