The Guardian energy reporter, Kingsley Jeremiah, has won the Energy Correspondent of the Year award of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics (NAEE).

The award followed the impactful contributions of the reporter to the growth of the energy industry in Nigeria and the African continent, President of NAEE, Yinka Omorogbe said at the award night in Abuja.

Omorogbe said the association, which is committed to growth of the energy sector and by extension, the economy of the country, would not fail to recognise individuals and corporate organisations that are committed to the growth of the industry.

NAEE is the Nigerian affiliate of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) based in the United States of America, with affiliations in over 100 countries.

Former President of the association and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Professorial Chair in Oil and Gas Economics and Management at the Institute for Oil and Gas Studies, University of Cape Coast, Prof. Wunmi Iledare, said the reporter who won the award for the second time, has been consistent in reporting the sector.

“His reports may not be palatable, but they are important to the growth of the sector. That’s what journalism is all about,” Iledare said.

Jeremiah, who joined the energy desk at The Guardian in 2017, last year won the ConOil Prize for Energy Correspondent of the Year at Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA). He also won the Peter Odili Prize for Power Reporter of Year on the same night, while being nominated as the Financial Journalist of the Year in South Africa.

In 2021, Kingsley won the ConOil Prize for Energy Correspondent of the Year at the 30th NMMA. He was the only African cohort at the 2020 Energy Journalism Initiative of Columbia University and in 2019, was awarded the NAEE Energy Correspondent of the Year.

Projected to be awarded the Financial Journalist of the year for the African Growth Category in Johannesburg on August 3, at the Salam Group Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism, Kingsley has distinguished himself as an outstanding journalist.
