Representative of Taipei Trade Office in Nigeria, Ambassador Andy Yih-Ping Liu commending the growing bilateral relations between Nigeria and Republic of China Taiwan, advised the federal government to consolidate the mutual relations and facilitate continuous smooth trade by renewing the new Trade Protection Investment Agreement between Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Taiwanese Trade Agency.
Liu, who made this known while addressing the media on the Traditional Lunar in Lagos, said this has become necessary with the appreciable increase in trade value between the two countries since the Taipei Trade Mission was set up in Nigeria.
“The Federal Government need to pay attention to smooth trade and facilitate investments since investments would definitely promote concrete industrialisation between the two countries.
“There is need to leverage on the signing of a memorandum of Understanding between Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Taiwanese Trade Agency with a view to encouraging more signing of MoU between Lagos Chamber of Commerce or NACCIMA with Taiwan Trading Council,” he said.
Liu who went down the memory lane, said the percentage increase in trade of 150 to 200 was noted during COVID-19, adding that Nigeria has continued to show interest in Taiwan while it too has not relented in reciprocating, a deed that has made the trade ties to hit 22 billion.
He further advanced the importance of government to government dialogue vis-à-vis establishment of agreement on mutual trade between the two countries with a view to facilitating commerce.
He assured that Taiwan and Nigeria would continue to maintain the present level of friendship as well as connecting each other’s expertise through the internet.
Liu who also ascertained Taiwan’s readiness to always bring economic development to the world vowed not to renege from Taiwan’s relations that would promote better understanding of Nigeria.
“The trade mission should do away with obstacles to communication with the provision of government-to-government dialogue on establishing an agreement for mutual trust and mutual trade between the two countries.
“Since Taiwanese industrialisation has gone just beyond labour intensive to high technology, I am assuring you that in future, Taiwan will be interested in daily life products that would move up to the level of high technology.
“While we have given our labour-intensive products, we have also keep hand tool, computer and a lot of good machinery in Taiwan, including high technology for healthcare and machinery we are ready to pay more attention to these items in the near future,” he said.
