Rotary District 9110 conducts 3,000 cataract, 45 fibroid surgeries

Rotary District 9110 medical missions have completed over 3,000 cataract and 45 fibroid surgeries in Lagos and Ogun States.

The Governor, Rotarian Ifeyinwa Ejezie, who disclosed this in Lagos in ahead of its hand to two new district governors, said it expanded focus to mental health awareness.

Ejezie who heads over 148 clubs highlighted other designated areas as water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, economic empowerment, and environment.


“This year, most people have had cause to be depressed due to economic circumstances and situations we found ourselves in. Many people have jumped over bridges to take their lives, so we have carried out this campaign all through the year, educating people on why they shouldn’t take their lives and telling them what needs to be done, especially speaking out.

“When you have a problem and depression sets in, the biggest challenge is not having somebody to talk to or believing that you would be laughed at when you open up. So, this is the challenge we have carried out through this Rotary year,” she said.

She emphasised Rotary’s continued commitment to polio eradication in Nigeria. She added: “Rotary played a major role in eradicating polio in Nigeria, polio has been eradicated for the past three years, we are on the 4th year now, and we have not stopped vaccination.

“We have partnered with the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to fight polio, two months ago, we were all in Abuja with the Chairman of the Polio Plus committee to present a cheque of $14million to the Minister of Health in conjunction with WHO and UNICEF, that is our contribution for Rotary International to assist in the continuous fight of Polio. Another $7million has just been released by Rotary International for the eradication and prevention of diseases,”

Ejezie outlined some of the district’s healthcare achievements, announced the division of the district into Districts 9111 and 9112.

She explained that the split will take effect on June 30, 2024, nothing that District 9111 will encompass Lagos Mainland and Ogun State areas including Abeokuta, Shagamu, Agbara, Ota, and others. District 9112 will cover Lagos Island, Apapa, Surulere, Ijebu-Ode, a section of Lagos Mainland, and more.
