Police assure of adequate security as Obiano bids farewell
Some residents of Awka, the Anambra State capital, yesterday, expressed concern at the restriction of members of the public from attending today’s inauguration of Governor-elect, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

The Guardian reports that Soludo’s inauguration will hold at the Secretary to the State Government’s (SSG) Conference Hall, Government House, Awka, as against the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, where previous transition events were held.

Director of the Soludo Governorship Campaign Organisation and former Commissioner for Information, C-Don Adinuba, had earlier announced that only 50 guests would be allowed into the hall for the event.

However, some residents of Awka expressed sadness at the arrangement, describing it as “strange in the political history of the state.”

A resident, Chidiebere Igbokwe, said inauguration of a governor was a very big event that usually attracted people from all walks of life, saying that barring people from catching a glimpse of such occasion is wrong.

Also, an Awka-based lawyer, Sunny Orji, said it was wrong for Prof. Soludo to shut out Anambra masses who massively voted him during the inauguration.

BESIDES, the state Police Command has pledged to provide adequate security to ensure peaceful transition from outgoing Governor Willie Obiano to the incoming governor.

State Commissioner of Police (CP), Echeng E. Echeng, who disclosed this at a media briefing on security situation in the state at State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Headquarters in Amawbia, assured that all security arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth transition.

Echeng noted that despite rise in crime that heralded the November 2021 governorship election, the police and other security agencies worked hard to ensure that the exercise was free, fair and credible.

MEANWHILE, Governor Willie Obiano will, from today, join the league of former Governors of the state as Soludo takes over the mantle of leadership.

In his farewell message yesterday, Obiano told the people that with their backing, he won in all 21 councils of the state in his reelection and commended them for the memorable victory they gave Soludo in last year’s governorship poll.
