Reinstatement of Speaker: Police seal off Plateau Assembly permanently

Plateau Assembly

Plateau State Police Command has ordered a permanent seal off of the state Assembly till further notice to avert bloodshed and breakdown of law and order.

The Command ordered that the House should remain shut and be guarded by police operatives.

This was disclosed, yesterday, by the Commissioner of Police, Bartholomew Onyeka, at the State Police Headquarters in Jos, when he addressed journalists in his office.
Onyeka said: “Let every person stay away from the premises of the state Assembly until contending issues are resolved amicably. By this, it means the House will remain sealed and guarded by the police till further notice.

“Nigerians are complex and difficult to manage. Even still, with the presence of the police at the House, some people are still planning to go and attack the place. What do you expect us to do? What do you expect from this kind of thing?”

He lamented the crude behaviour of some people, which does not portray them as civilised when there are law enforcement agents to maintain law and order.

“We must not allow this recklessness to continue in our society. We got to know about this judgement through social media. We were not initially served or informed.

“Naturally, when something like this happens, the police, as the peacemaker of the entire world, needed to be informed or communicated. But we were kept off.

“When the judgement was given in favour of the impeached Speaker, Nuhu Ayuba, that he be reinstated, he ran from the court straight to the House, took pictures and took some snapshots and posted them on social media, suggesting that he had taken over the place. We are not politicians. We should be allowed to do our job?

He said: “As the Commissioner of the Police, I am in better position to know what is happening in the state, security wise. Information reached me that some people were mobilising to storm the House. It is in that respect that the police went there to maintain law and order.”
