PRODA begins research on Lithium Ion for production of made- in-Nigeria batteries

Peter Ogbobe
Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, has commenced research on Lithium Ion for production of batteries that are wholly Nigerian made.

The idea is to produce batteries for laptops, phones and inverters for the Nigerian market, using local raw materials, to stop patronising batteries from overseas.

It was gathered that a team of scientists recently returned from India after training toward actualising the project.

Director General of PRODA, Dr. Peter Ogbobe, disclosed this when he received executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents’ Chapel, who paid him a courtesy visit.

Ogbobe stated that the research was aimed at developing Lithium Ion with the institute’s formula to reduce importation of batteries into the country, adding that Nigeria has enough deposits of granite.

He explained that when the Institute succeeds in producing the battery, it would appoint a private investor to help commercialise the product.

Ogbobe further noted that since he assumed office nine months ago, efforts have been made to restore the institute towards realising its mandate.
