Police apprehend varsity student for illegal possession of firearm

A 400-level student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi has been apprehended for allegedly possessing illegal firearms.

A police spokesman in the state, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the student’s arrest on Wednesday, stating he was apprehended following a tip-off from a vigilante group.

The suspect illegally obtained one locally-made gun, one locally-made pistol, and 9mm live ammunition, according to Wakil.

He added that the student, who has not been named, reportedly admitted to the offence but claimed the weapons belonged to someone else previously arrested for possessing an illegal firearm in 2021.

The incident follows the arrest of a 28-year-old business café operator accused of allegedly defrauding ATBU students of N663,000, their school registration fees.

Wakil said police preliminary investigations revealed the suspect collected the money under false pretences, issuing fake registration slips to his victims.

The police spokesman also confirmed that the suspect confessed to issuing fraudulent slips to multiple students and assured the public that both suspects would be arraigned in court after investigation.
