Pedestrian dies in Lagos multiple auto crash

A Commercial Toyota Hiase Bus with registration number NSW 216 XA and fully loaded with pepper and other perishable items early yesterday morning rammed into two other Volkswagen commercial buses, killing a male pedestrian at Ketu by Demuri Junction inward Kosofe, Lagos.


Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Adebayo Taofiq, said the incident occurred at about 6:45a.m.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that an Inter-State Toyota Hiase commercial bus (NSW 216 XA) fully loaded with pepper and other perishable goods while on top speed lost control as a result of a brake failure.

He said the vehicle rammed into another two commercial Volkswagen buses and killed a pedestrian waiting to board a bus at Ketu Bus Stop by Demurin Junction along Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

“Another trapped female passenger inside one of the Volkswagen commercial bus was rescued by LASTMA personnel and immediately handed over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASMBUS).

“The commercial bus driver was immediately apprehended by LASTMA personnel, while police men from Alapere Police Station provided backup during the rescue operations,” he said.

Head, LASTMA Zone 32 Ketu, Olawaye Olugbenga, who led the rescue operations confirmed that his team immediately evacuated all commercial buses involved in the incident to pave way for an unhindered free vehicular movement inward Kosofe, Mile 12 area.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has appealed to pedestrians to always stay at government designated bus stops to board commercial buses.

He warned both commercial and private car drivers to stop over-speeding and ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained, including the braking system before embarking on any journey within or outside Lagos.
