Chairman of its ad hoc committee on the piece of legislation, Mohammed Monguno, yesterday, notified members of the lower legislative chamber at plenary presided over by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Commencement of proceedings was delayed for two hours after lawmakers from the oil-rich Niger Delta region, spearheaded by Chinyere Igwe and Boma Goodhead, vehemently protested against the adoption of the report of the Conference Committee on PIB.
The legislators were piqued by the decision of the committee to retain the Senate’s three per cent equity share as against the five per cent proposed by the House for host communities in the proposed law.
The decision by Monguno to step down the adoption of the conference committee’s report appeared to have been reached when the members met behind closed doors.
The PIB seeks to provide legal, governance, regulatory and fiscal framework for the Nigerian petroleum industry, as well as cater for the development of oil-bearing areas and other related matters.
