The governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano is keen on the investigation and prosecution of Onyedika Nnofu, who allegedly killed his 47-year-old visually, impaired brother, Mmadu-abuchi Nnofu.

The chairman of Joint National Association of Persons with Disability in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Council Area of the state and Governor Obiano have expressed happiness that Nnofu is currently cooling off at the police station, Awka, the state capital.

The Chairman of the newly constituted Anambra State Disability Right Commission, Chukwuka Ezewuzie pointed out that the coming into being of the Commission would help quicken the process of demanding for justice for Mmaduabuchi.

Ezewuzie who is also the Special Adviser to the governor on Disability Matters, said the group was on top of the situation.

Investigations by The Guardian revealed that the assailant, Nnofu also set the corpse of his brother, Mmaduabuchi, ablaze after killing him on a Sunday.

The Police, it was gathered, arrested the assailant and kept him in custody pending conclusion of investigations into the circumstances leading to the killing.

The Police, it was learnt, would drag Nnofu to court as soon as investigations are over. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Echeng Echeng through the Police Public Relations Officer, Toochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest, detention and interrogation of Nnofu.

“Preliminary information showed that the brothers were having issues (conflict) over land,” the police spokesperson said.

While noting that the police is currently interrogating Nnofu, he added that the commissioner of police has assured of a “comprehensive investigation” into the incident.

MEANWHILE, colleagues of the deceased in the Joint National Association of Persons with Disability (JONAPWD) in Anambra State are seething in anger in connection with the gruesome killing.

The group in a statement issued on Monday by its Chairman, Ugochukwu Okeke, contended that Maduabuchi was killed because the victim was blind and helpless.

It appealed to the police, the state government and members of civil society organisations to ensure that the suspect and his other conspirators were duly punished to prevent further maltreatment of persons living with disabilities.

“We are demanding justice for the late Maduabuchi. Justice is necessary to prevent a repeat of this man’s inhumanity to our member or any other person anywhere in Nigeria,” the association pleaded.
