As the 2023 general elections inch closer, Nigerians have been advised to vote for credible leaders who will deliver good governance.
Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, gave the advice, yesterday, at the first Distinguished Public Lecture of the Faculty of Humanities, Anchor University, Lagos State.
Obasa was the Chairman of the event, themed ‘Redefining Leadership and Governance: The Quest to Build A Virile Knowledge-Based Society’, which took place at Anchor University Multipurpose Hall, Ayobo.
The speaker, who said it was no more a hidden fact that the problem of Nigeria centres on leadership, added that Nigerians had been suffering in the hands of leaders who refused to take them out of the woods.
“What Nigerians need now is good governance, which means that they have to open their eyes as 2023 election is coming, to select credible leaders.
“Due to bad leadership, Nigerians have been suffering from bad roads, blackout and infrastructural deficit. Nigerians should ask those the aspirants for their credentials and what they have done in the past, to know if they are competent or not to be voted for,” he said.
Going down memory lane, Obasa drew Nigerians’ attention to the government of the late Muammar Gadhafi of Libya and remarked that “a dictator that performs is better than a democrat who does not,” noting that what Nigerians should be concerned with is such a leader who will deliver come 2023.
The Guest Lecturer, Prof. Ayodeji Olukoju, lamented the quality of leadership Nigeria and asked those in the position of power, and those aspiring to be, to learn from the Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who was reportedly a decade years ahead of his contemporaries in terms of leadership quality.
The professor of History and Strategic Studies, University of Lagos, who doubles as the Pro-Chancellor, Chrisland University, Ogun State, described knowledge as a potential power, urging the government to fund education adequately because knowledge would prepare the youths of today for better leadership positions tomorrow.
