Security challenges in the country have moved senators from the northern part to speak in one voice for the first time.
At a meeting yesterday, which was attended by the senate leadership and all senators from the zone, the lawmakers expressed deep concern at the worsening security situation in the zone and Nigeria at large.
Briefing journalists at the end of the meeting, Chairman of the Forum of Northern Senators, Aliyu Wamakko, said they were deeply concerned and determined to find solution to the problem.
“We met as Northern senators to show our deepest concern over the rising security challenges in this part and the entire country and on what needs to be done. This country needs to be as secured as possible for every Nigerian to be where he wants to be, business without fear and sleep peacefully,” he said.
Before it adjourned for two weeks to reconvene on June 22, the senate had held a special session yesterday to mark the second anniversary of the 9th National Assembly, which was inaugurated on June 11, 2019.
MERCY Corps has said that the insecurity in the North East has metamorphosed into borderless terrorism, due to links with international terror groups like Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
According to the global humanitarian organisation, the crisis in the North East is an evolving situation, and requires joint effort to bring it to a stop.
Speaking at the implementation of the North East Conflict Management and Stabilisation (NE-CMS) programme yesterday in Abuja, Country Director of Mercy Corps, Ndubisi Anyanwu, noted that Nigeria was very important to Africa and the world, while calling for sustained efforts to bring lasting peace in the country.
“We want a Nigeria that is empowered, resilient and secured. The world is facing many challenges; apart from the Coronavirus Disease, we also have economic challenges, which also fuel insecurity.
But we are here to improve the situation and support efforts to build a better Nigeria,” he said.
