• Yari counters Shinkafi over claim on party membership
Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman, and his Kogi counterpart, Matthew Kolawole, have urged the North West and North East to support Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi to be Nigeria’s President in 2023.
At an extraordinary meeting of the North East lawmakers in Bauchi, yesterday, the speakers said that the son of the North Central should be supported to balance the power rotation in the North.
Arguing that only the North Central is yet to produce either the president or the vice, he urged the North not to allow the South to produce the next President. “Since 1999, Olusegun Obasanjo did eight years and Goodluck Jonathan did six years, making 14 years; but Umaru YarAdua did two years, and if President Muhammadu Buhari finishes his tenure, it will be 10 years. North needs another four years to balance up.”
A CHIEFTAIN of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Blessing Agbomhere, has explained why those aspiring for the party chairmanship are from the North.
He told reporters in Abuja that the development was based on the understanding that positions occupied by party chieftains from the South would have to be rotated to the North ahead of the 2023 poll.
Senators Tanko Al-Makura, Abdulaziz Yari, and George Akume, as well as Ali Modu Sherrif, who were governors of Nasarawa, Zamfara, Borno and Benue states, are among the leading contenders for the APC chairmanship.
AHEAD of the APC national convention, a chairmanship aspirant, Abdulaziz Yari, has faulted the claim by his rival, Sani Shinkafi, that he is not a registered member of the party.
Shinkafi, who declared his aspiration for the plum job on Wednesday at the national secretariat of the party, claimed that Yari, a two-term governor of Zamfara, was no longer eligible to vie for the chairmanship of the party.
Yari’s Campaign Group led by Abdullahi Tsare, described Shinkafi as a noise-maker who should not be taken seriously by the party and the general public.
The group maintained that Yari is a duly registered member of the APC with a genuine membership card, adding that it behoves the Mai Mala-Buni led caretaker committee to be more circumspect in its dealings with some politicians because of their antecedents.
