NLC orders picketing of Labour Party offices over alleged corruption by Abure

Mr. Julius Abure

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its state councils and political commission to picket Labour Party (LP) offices across the country.

NLC gave this charge in a communique dated Tuesday, March 19, 2024 even as the tussle between the Labour union and the leadership of the LP worsened.

The letter was signed by the chairperson of the NLC Political Commission, Titus Amba, and the secretary, Chris Uyot after a virtual meeting of the NLC National Political Commission and the leadership of the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees on Tuesday.

“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024,” the letter read.

“In view of the soon to be held all-inclusive national convention of the Labour Party, the NLC State Councils and the NLC Political Committees should immediately embark on a statewide mobilisation of workers to join the NLC Political Commission and the Labour Party.

“The NLC State Council and State Political Committees should work with our civil society allies, students, traders, and professionals to ensure that the picketing and mobilisation are successfully executed.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission on Monday described the Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, as a “drowning wannabe politricstar.”

NLC while slamming Abure for losing the confidence of most of the critical stakeholders in the party also said it owns the Labour Party.

“While Mr. Julius Abure seeks to evade the fundamental issues raised in our last press release where we demanded for his immediate resignation for convening a National Convention that he had no sole proprietorship over, we wish to remind him that the Nigeria Labour Congress remains the institutional trustees of the Labour Party,” said the NLC.

“This statement of truth is backed by the fact of history, law and court pronouncement. This provides the premise for our demand as a critical stakeholder for Abure’s resignation.”
