At least nine people were killed Monday after a passenger van and cargo truck collided in Mexico’s southeastern state of Quintana Roo, a popular tourist destination.

The incident occurred in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, located in the central part of the state, the local prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“Preliminary data indicate that nine people — among them three minors — passengers of the transport vehicle, lost their lives,” the agency said.

It added that six other people were injured and were taken to hospitals.

On February 19, five Argentine tourists and a Mexican citizen died in a vehicle accident on the highway linking the beach resort of Tulum and the town of Puerto Aventuras, also in Quintana Roo.

On February 24, another accident in the state of San Luis Potosi, in north-central Mexico, left 10 dead.

Traffic accidents in Mexico have been increasing since 2020, when they totaled 301,678.

In 2022, 377,231 accidents were recorded, according to the most recent figures from the national statistics institute.
