Nigerian man gets life imprisonment in UK for killing wife

Olubunmi Abodunde and his late wife, Taiwo

A Nigerian man, Olubunmi Abodunde, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 17 years in the UK after beating his wife to death with their son’s skateboard.

Police officers described hearing nearly 50 bangs coming from inside the house and when they finally entered, Abodunde’s wife, Taiwo, was found with her skull smashed in.

Judge Martyn Levett, of the Ipswich Crown Court, while jailing Abodunde, described him as ferocious, ruthless, cold-blooded, callous and savage.

“The simple fact is that you strangled your wife and then beat her to death and used one of the children’s skateboards to batter her skull,” the judge said.

Abodunde had accused his wife of having affairs and had been jealous and suspicious.

Police had been involved with the couple on different occasions over allegations of domestic violence incidents.

The day before, Abodunde was arrested after officers arrived at the couple’s home and found his wife with a split lip.

He was, however, released on police bail later the same day with a condition to stay away from the marital home and also not to approach the deceased.

The following morning, he went home after working a night shift at Tesco, claiming he wanted his mobile phone.

At 9:20 am, two police officers arrived to take a statement about the previous day’s incident but didn’t enter the property until 9.55 am – despite the noise coming from inside – after they got permission.

They immediately confirmed she was dead.

Following a post-mortem examination, it was discovered she had been throttled until she fell unconscious, then stamped on until her ribs were broken.
