Nigerian dramatist to immortalise Abibatu Mogaji

Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musawa, endorses Abibatu Mogaji Stage Play

Written by renowned playwright Professor Ahmed Yerima, ‘Abibatu Mogaji’ is set to hit the stage in July 2024, starting with three outstanding performances in Lagos and Abuja.


The command performance, scheduled for July 9, 2024, is expected to host dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to celebrate the life and times of Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji – the Nationalist and iconic first Iyaloja General of Nigeria at the Conference Centre, Presidential Villa.

Subsequent performances are open to the general public via tickets and will take place on July 11th at the NAF Centre, Abuja, and July 14th at the Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos.

This biographical masterpiece tells the story of motherhood, legacy, and resilience of one of Nigeria’s most outstanding democratic icons who stood alongside Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the face of obstacles and fought for national democracy, freedom, and justice.

The play also highlights her role in nurturing her son, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the current President of Nigeria.

Her legacy as the first Iyaloja of Nigeria is also reflected in the story, which details her impact on women’s empowerment and trade development in the country.

Commenting on the project, Professor Ahmed Yerima emphasises the importance of remembering those whose tireless contributions to our nation have led to the freedom we enjoy today.

According to him, “It is crucial that our history is not forgotten. We have to continue to remember the actions of our heroes past and draw inspiration from their resilience to bring about change and freedom for all. This is the essence of the Abibatu Mogaji Project.”

The Executive Producer of ‘Abibatu Mogaji’, Ola Awakan, an award-winning Broadcast Journalist and Dramatist, said, “The project aims to immortalise Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji and use her intriguing success story to motivate Nigerians, especially women aspiring for greatness. The project also aims to preserve history and culture.”

The highly anticipated stage production has garnered endorsements and support from key dignitaries, including Seyi Tinubu, grandson of the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji and son of President Bola Tinubu.

The project has also received significant endorsements from the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy under Barrister Hannatu Musawa; the Office of Iyaloja under Chief Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, Iyaloja General and granddaughter of Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji. Other key individuals and groups who pledged their support and endorsement for the Abibatu Mogaji Stage Production include Hon. Tunde Doherty, Chairman, APC UK Chapter, Hon. Jamaluddeen Kabir, APC Deputy National Youth Leader & Executive Producer of the Abibatu Mogaji Project, amongst others.
