Minister harps on AI to tackle insecurity in schools

Yusuf Sununu

The Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, has stressed the need for advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to strengthen surveillance in schools.

The minister emphasised that deploying AI across schools would assist in teaching, monitoring, and securing learners and teachers.

“We must apply technology, including AI, to establish robust tracking mechanisms and surveillance around our schools,” Sununu said. The minister expressed confidence that the National Assembly would come up with recommendations geared toward deploying advanced technologies through effective partnerships to promote economic, technological, and national security awareness.

“We understand the significance of information technology in the 21st century and its role in enhancing economic competitiveness globally. Furthermore, we recognise its potential to expand access to education at all levels,” he added. He reassured of the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising the development, proper application, and deployment of information technology in the education system.

“The Federal Government is committed to positioning Nigeria as a global leader, particularly in Africa. Information technology plays a crucial role in realising this objective,” Sununu affirmed. He urged professionals to align with the government’s vision to contribute to national development.

In her keynote address, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on entrepreneurship development in innovation and digital economy, Jennifer Adighije, emphasised AI’s potential to drive sustainable socio-economic development and accelerate prosperity through digital efficiency.

“We recognise AI as a technological revolution that will reshape various sectors, from education to healthcare, manufacturing, and beyond,” she stated.
