Renowned Memphis DJ Rick Buchanan, popularly known by his stage name ‘Slick Rick,’ was discovered decapitated in his Berclair home on Angel Avenue. The gruesome incident, currently under investigation by local authorities, has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a significant local personality.
Buchanan’s brother, John Buchanan, made the horrifying discovery on Wednesday afternoon, January 24, when he found Slick Rick dead in his residence. John immediately called 911 after stumbling upon the distressing scene.
“I walked in and found him, and I just called 911,” recounted John to FOX13. “I thought his coat was up over his head like it was cold or something. I ran out and then I ran back in. And, then I realized it was something worse.”
The DJ was found with his pants pulled down, gripping his keys, adding to the mysterious circumstances surrounding his tragic death.
Slick Rick had been a prominent figure in the Memphis music scene for decades, leaving an indelible mark as a local personality. However, in 2014, he faced a life-altering event when he was shot outside a night club. According to John, this incident marked a turning point for Slick Rick, transforming him into a recluse who struggled to find work.
“He became a recluse after the shooting,” shared John, noting his brother’s preference to stay at home with his dog, Lucky. Following Buchanan’s untimely death, John plans to adopt Lucky, offering a small solace amidst the tragedy.
The family is grappling with the horrifying nature of Buchanan’s discovery, and their desperation for answers grows as Memphis PD launches an investigation into the suspicious incident.
“He was wild but he was a good man,” expressed Kathy Calaway, a family friend. “He had the energy of an entire power plant, would, and did help anyone if he was able and was such a positive, kind man.”
The shocking news has reverberated through the community, leaving friends and family in disbelief. Karen Dillard Brown, a close associate, shared her emotions, stating, “I am so damn sad, frustrated, shocked & angry but I shall bite my tongue & go turn up some bad-ass rock n roll for a while.”
