Nigerian singer Mayorkun has taken legal action against social media influencer Precious Kingsley, also known as Nicki DaBarbie.
The lawsuit, amounting to N1 billion, addresses allegations of defamation of character and ritual accusations made by the influencer.
The conflict began when Nicki DaBarbie accused Mayorkun and fellow artist Skiibii of engaging in ritualistic practices. In a series of social media posts and videos, she claimed to have been lured under pretenses and feared for her life due to the alleged actions of the artists.
Mayorkun’s legal team issued a statement denying all allegations, emphasizing that the claims are baseless and have caused significant financial loss and emotional trauma to the artist.
They also highlighted that these accusations have tarnished Mayorkun’s reputation and good standing in society.
The legal document prepared by Monarchs & Stroud Legal Practitioners on behalf of Mayorkun calls for an apology from Nicki DaBarbie and stresses the serious nature of defamation under Nigerian law.
The firm’s statement asserts that the influencer’s remarks not only constitute defamation but also violate the rights of Mayorkun.
Skiibii also posted a statement to his Instagram saying: “I will no longer allow anyone to tarnish my image because they know Skiibii won’t run to the media to speak. Although I’ve remained silent on all issues to preserve peace, I believe it’s time to reconsider that approach. In due time, the truth will come to light” he wrote.
Influencer Nicki DaBarbie posted an old video of Skiibii’s ex-girlfriend, Ms DSF, explaining an experience she had with Skiibii where she was given a drink and subsequently passed out.
She explained that by the time of her waking, her gadgets, accessories, and $10k cash were missing.
Nicki DaBarbie claims that the exact situation happened to her. She wrote: “Same thing he did to me, gave me stuff to drink and tried to use me.. He told me a different thing about DSF Said she was obsessed and other stuffs I wouldn’t like to say.. That’s what he’s gonna say about me just wait and see”
