Lawyer tasks Reps on blue economy policy

Jean Chiazor-Anishere

A maritime lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN), Mrs. Jean Chiazor-Anishere, has urged the House of Representatives to assist in formulating a national Blue Economy Policy or strategy for sustainable ocean resource management and development.

She said it was important for stakeholders to stay informed with updates and trends in the Blue Economy global space, building international networks and collaboration, as well as creating a conducive legal framework lucrative to foreign investors.

Chiazor-Anishere said a well-defined framework plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable development within Nigeria’s Blue Economy.

According to her, it provides the necessary structure for effective governance, resource management and stakeholder collaboration. She said a well-defined legal framework ensures clear guidelines for sustainable practices, environmental protection and equitable distribution of benefits.

“Nigeria may have a national Blue Economy policy or strategy that outlines the government’s vision for sustainable ocean resource management and development. This could include provisions for mineral resources and offshore exploration. There may be changes or updates to laws and regulations, so stakeholders need to stay informed.

“It is essential for investors and stakeholders in the mineral and offshore exploration sectors to seek legal advice to ensure compliance with current regulations and requirements,” she explained.

The maritime lawyer also stressed that laws and regulations relating to environmental protection and conservation are crucial to ensure that offshore exploration activities do not harm marine ecosystems. She said Nigeria needs to have a comprehensive legal framework and strict compliance to outline the government’s vision for sustainable ocean resource management and development.
