LASG makes sports’ competition mandatory in schools

Lagos State Government has given directive that all the education districts in the state should organise sports competition among schools every year to discover early talents and nurture them.

To comply with the directive, Education District VI has kick-started the competition.

Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District VI, Shareefah Yusuf, who spoke during its yearly sports festival and advocacy, said the competition was Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s initiative to discover and nurture talents for global competitions.

Yusuf, while commending the state government’s initiative, urged the governor to give more support on sports festival.

“We are Oliver Twist. We are asking for more support so that we can take sports to the global level,” she said.

The state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, commended the state governor, District VI tutor-general, directors, principals and the teachers on the successful outing, noting that sports festival is part of schools’ learning activities.

He, therefore, urged the Physical Education teachers to come up with more sports training to prepare students for global competitions.

Also, Director, Co-curricular, Science and Technology, Paul Ebunola Legbeti, said the yearly sports advocacy was to discover talents and gifts early in the area of sports.

He said once a child’s gift is discovered, it should be nurtured, be it in running, jumping, swimming and others.
