LAPO lifts rural agriculture with N1.4b


A non-governmental organisation, Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO), has empowered over 300,000 rural farmers with a loan of N1.4b in the first quarter of 2024 that is aimed at boost rural agriculture and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across Nigeria.


The loan was disbursed to 324,070 farmers across 303 branches in 22 states through its LAPO Agricultural and Rural Development Initiative (LARDI).

Through LARDI, the organisation aims to increase access to financial services, improve agricultural productivity, and reduce poverty among rural farmers.

According to the NGO, the support is expected to enhance agricultural productivity, increase food security, and promote economic growth in rural communities.


The Executive Director, Microfinance Segment (LAPO), Dr. Victor Noruwa, advised the beneficiaries to utilise the funds judiciously to add value to their agricultural activities.

“We encourage our beneficiaries to make the most of this opportunity by investing in their farms, expanding their operations, and improving their yields. This will not only improve their livelihoods, but also contribute to the growth of the national economy,” he said.

Also, the organisation said it has empowered 675,115 community members across the country with health training in the first quarter of 2024.


The health training programme, which was conducted for community members and clients of the LAPO Microfinance Bank clients in Edo, Kogi, Enugu, Rivers, Zamfara, Enugu, Lagos, and Abuja, aimed at educating the beneficiaries on the importance of healthy living, disease prevention, and regular medical check-ups.

The programme covered topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and disease management, and provided participants with the knowledge and skills needed to take charge of their health.

Executive Director, LAPO, Dr. Honestus Ayo Obadiora commended the beneficiaries for their enthusiasm and commitment to the programme.

“We are thrilled to see so many community members taking advantage of this opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing.

“We encourage all beneficiaries to embrace healthy lifestyle choices and regular medical check-ups to ensure their continued health and prosperity,” he said.
