The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, yesterday, suspended six members for anti-party activities. It, however, urged Nigerians to remain calm as it plans to reclaim its alleged stolen mandate in court.
The state’s Secretary of the party, Sam Okpala, who disclosed this in Lagos, said that the suspension followed a report from the disciplinary committee set up to look into the allegations leveled against the members.
The suspended members include former Chairman of the party, Olukayode Salako; Moshood Salvador, Opeyemi Taiwo, Olumide Adesoyin, Mutiu Okunlola and Theodore Ezeunara.
Okpala said that the LP could not accept to have enemies within, noting that nobody would be allowed to stay in the party and at the same time be an enemy in the house.
He said: “We thank Lagosians for their votes for LP during the presidential and governorship elections. We ask all to remain calm, we know that Nigerians and Lagosians gave us the mandate but it was stolen. While we focus our energy as a law abiding political party by following the due process of the law to reclaim our mandate, we ask that Nigerians and Obi-dients remain calm and keep on praying and supporting the party. Very soon, we will reclaim our mandate.
“Following the election, the LP discovered that there are a lot of anti-party activities committed by people who claim to be members of the party in Lagos State. The LP in Lagos, in her post-mortem of what really happened during the national elections, discovered that a lot of people who called themselves members were indeed working for the opposition.
“With that information, LP Lagos set up a disciplinary committee headed by one of the deputy chairman of the party to look into these allegations. The disciplinary committee was set up to give everybody involved a sense of fair hearing and an opportunity to defend themselves and clear their names.
“At the end of the exercise, the report was tendered before the state working committee and at the meeting held on March 31, 2023, the report was accepted and ratified for implementation. We had seven members of the party involved in these anti-party allegations. All the seven members were given the opportunity to defend themselves but one of them, Olasunbo Onitiri, told us that he had resigned from the party before engaging in anti-party activities.
“We want the world to know that LP doors are open to accept genuine members, people that will be committed to the progress of the party but we cannot keep our doors open for people who will come in to destroy the party.”
