Lagos judiciary creates more divisions to improve access to justice

Justice Kazeem Alogba

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba has announced the creation of two additional judicial divisions covering new geographical areas of the state.

The CJ made this known on a public notice issued by the Lagos State Judiciary and signed by the Chief Registrar, Mr. Tajudeen Elias.

He announced the creation of the Eti-Osa Judicial Division and the Yaba/Surulere Judicial Division.

The creation of the divisions is expected to improve access to justice and decongest the existing courts in the state.

It was done pursuant to the powers conferred on the Lagos Chief Judge under Section 51(1) of the State’s High Court Law 2015.

The Eti-Osa Division will cover the entire Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area and Iru/Victoria Island Local Council Development Area.

The Yaba/Surulere Division will cover the Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Surulere Local Government Area and Yaba Local Council Development Area.

The Chief Registrar stated that the commencement of legal operations, filing of new cases and adjudication will start immediately in the two new divisions.

He also stated that cases already instituted in other divisions will continue to be heard there except otherwise directed by the Chief Judge.
