Lagos issues advisory as seven people drown in six days

Lagos State government has advised all public facilities, including beaches and swimming pools, to adhere to safety regulations on swimming pools.

The advisory was issued after police in the state said seven persons drowned at different swimming pools and beaches in the state within six days.

“Two drowned in one hotel in Mushin and one in a hotel on the Lagos Island,” said Lagos police spokesman Ben Hundeyin.

“One also drowned at Ibeshe island, two fell into Third Mainland Bridge in an accident and one in a hotel in Shasha.”

Hundeyin said the deaths were avoidable if all the necessary safety measures were put in place and observed.

Lagos State Safety Commission boss Lanre Mojola said the swimming pool regulation is to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors engaging in aquatic activities.

“The safety of our citizens and visitors is of utmost importance, and we must all work together to prevent drowning and ensure a safe environment for aquatic activities”, Mojola said.

Mojola said, among other things, swimming pools are expected to ensure the presence of certified lifeguards during operational hours.

Such facilities are also expected to display clear safety rules and emergency procedures while providing appropriate safety equipment, including first aid kits at the barest minimum.

“The Lagos State Swimming Pool Regulations were established to create a sustainable safety culture, outline critical safety policies, standards, and practices,” Mojola said.
