Following the presentation of N1, 043,450,492 worth of retirement benefit bond certificates to the 91st batch of 222 retirees of the Lagos State Public Service, the Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Babatola Obilana, has said the move is to acknowledge the labour and service of the retirees, who contributed immensely to the growth of the state.

Obilana, who acknowledged the effort of the state in prompt payments of the retiree’s benefits, said: “Lagos State has consistently implemented the contributory pension scheme since its inception in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Pension Reform law of March 19, 2007, now amended.

“The state government in recognition of its dedicated workforce has consistently prioritised pension contributions in the yearly state budget. We are happy to note that Lagos State is one of the few states in the federation that does not owe monthly pension contributions. Both employees and employer’s contributions are remitted promptly into individual employees’ Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) after salaries are received”.

He added: “The efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the current administration towards the success of the contributory pension cannot be over-emphasised. Despite the numerous local and global challenges, the state government has made continuous monthly payments a priority to ensure retirees access their retirement benefits as soon as possible.”

While warning the retirees to beware of any group who may approach them to fast track their entitlements by paying a fee, he said, “I want to enjoin you all to go to your PFAs or ASPs at least a week from today to ensure prompt access to the funds in your RSAs. Please direct all inquiries to LASPEC via our website or official phone lines, which can be found on our website or the fliers given to your.”

Reacting to the certificate she got, one Mrs. Jane Adaradogoba, who admitted that she retired in 2019, said: “I collected my bond certificate and I feel highly elated. For those of them who have not collected theirs, I will advise them to exercise patience because the Lagos State government is doing very well.

“My advice to those still in service is that they should put in their best because hard work does not kill. It is good for one to serve and serve diligently so that at the end of it all, you will be happy and be glorified with what you are going to be given and God will magnify it,” she said.

To another retiree, Apostle Abiola Onabule, “Thank God I am alive to collect this certificate. My advice to those who are still in service is that it is not rosy out there. They should not wait until when they retire before starting up something that they will fall back on or else it will not be easy for them.”
