Lagos State Government, yesterday, reiterated its commitment to safe, functional and seamless transportation to grow the economy and create job opportunities.

The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who gave the assurance during the launch of 15 40-seater ferries, said that his administration would continue to deliver dividends of democracy to residents of the state.

He promised that the state government, under his watch, would not relent in delivering good governance for the remaining three years to complete his second term.

Sanwo-Olu said that the launch of the new ferries was part of the drive to have a comprehensive integrated urban mass transportation in the state.

The governor said that the ferries were locally produced with only the engines imported.

He disclosed that to ensure safety on Lagos waterways, the Lagos State Waterways Authority has distributed over 20,000 free lifejackets to passengers.

Sanwo-Olu, who implored boat operators to adhere to safety measures, enjoined the regulators to enforce the rules no matter who is involved, saying that safety on Lagos waterways should not be compromised.

In his goodwill message, Commissioner for Transportation, Seun Osiyemi, said the launch of the new Omi-Bus ferries, is a testament to the collective commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Lagos residents.

In his welcome address, the General Manager of Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said that the unveiling of the ferries signifies a significant step in the state’s efforts to improve inland waterways transportation as well as enhance the daily transit experience for residents, making their journeys safer, faster, and more comfortable.

On his part, Chief Executive Officer of Caverton Group, Olabode Makanjuola, whose company built the ferries, emphasised the importance of the project in enhancing mobility and reducing road traffic congestion.

He said the project aligns with the transportation vision of the Sanwo-Olu-led administration, which aims to create an integrated transportation infrastructure to enhance connectivity and mobility across the state with an improved water transport system.
