IWD: Cross River NAWOJ calls for more gender inclusion, end to harmful practices

Obaseki hails resilience, courage of Nigerian women in tough times
As Nigeria joins the global community to mark the 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD), the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Cross River State chapter, has called on the government and stakeholders to join hands in ensuring an end to all forms of harmful practices that is affecting the progress and development of Nigerian women.

The association also called for more gender inclusion in political decisions, noting that this year’s theme, ‘Inspire Inclusion,’ and the overarching theme, ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,’ emphasised the need for creating an inclusive society and investing in women.

During a road walk, yesterday, in Calabar to commemorate the 2024 IWD, the state Chairman, Rekpene Uket, added that NAWOJ is particularly concerned that women have not been given enough platforms to showcase their God’s given talents.

She noted that these practices are linked mostly to economic, social and cultural norms.

SIMILARLY, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has hailed Nigerian women for their resilience and courage in the wake of the dire conditions they have had to operate with, occasioned by the rising inflation and other economic challenges.

The governor, in a statement to mark International Women’s Day (IWD), noted that the inflationary trend has heavily impacted families, which are struggling to survive amid the high cost of living and other economic headwinds.
