Integration of robotic education into curriculum excites education minister

Tahir Mamman

Education Minister, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has said the integration of robotics education into the basic education curriculum enriches students’ academic experience.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday while declaring open the First Lego League National Robotics Championship, Prof. Mamman said the development would bring students up to par with 21st-century technology and education standards.

According to the Minister, it would also equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital world.

Represented by the Director, Technology and Science Education Department at the Ministry, Dr (Mrs), Muyibat Olodo, the Minister said: “As we witness the ingenious solutions presented by the teams today, it is a reminder that our education system is evolving, keeping pace with the dynamic needs of the 21st century.

“The integration of robotics education into the curriculum not only enriches our students’ academic experience but also equips them with the skills necessary to thrive in a world that is becoming increasingly digital. This will also bring Robotics education to the reach of every learner and expose them to the nitty gritty of Artificial Intelligence (ΑΙ)”.

He described the theme of this year’s challenge; “MASTERPIECE”, as apt, adding that it holds the promise of shaping future leaders and innovators.

The event, he explained, is not just a competition but the embodiment of learning, collaboration, discovery and the pursuit of knowledge that defines the essence of education.

“In the landscape of modern education, where the demands on our students are ever- evolving, events like the First Lego League play a pivotal role. They serve as a testament to our commitment to fostering creativity, critical thinking, innovation, technological and digital literacy among our youth. It is heartening to witness the dedication and passion displayed by the young minds who have embraced the challenge of robotics with such enthusiasm.

“The intricate connection between Science, Technology, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) and our daily lives is more apparent than ever. It is not just about building robots but about instilling in our students a profound understanding of how science and technology can be harnessed for the betterment of society,” he added.

The event which runs from 24th to 26th January, 2024 is organised by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with Coderina Education and Technology Foundation.

On his part, Founder of Coderina Education and Technology Foundation, Olajide Ajayi, said 56 schools cutting across Unity Schools, private and state schools are participating in the championship.

According to him, the winner will represent Nigeria at international robotic and Artificial Intelligence championships in the United States, Australia, Norway and Brazil.

The Federal Government had in August last year directed the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to ensure that robotics and artificial intelligence are incorporated into the basic education curriculum in the country.
