ICAN laments restiveness in oil producing communities

President, lnstitute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Dr Innocent Okwuosa, has called for more empowerment schemes for youths in oil producing communities in the country to tackle youths’ restiveness and guaranteed better future for them.

He made the appeal at a ceremony where he was admitted into the Royal Privy Council of Oguta and was conferred with the title of Damanze Aka-Udo by the paramount ruler of Oguta Ancient Kingdom, Igwe Nnani Iyiche. The Oririnzere Oba is the highest traditional title in Oguta.

The ICAN President expressed worries about increasing youths’ restiveness in oil-producing communities of which Oguta is one, promising to use his office to address the issue by ensuring that youths in Oguta are attracted to the accounting profession through the ICAN’s Accounting Technician Scheme programme.

He said: “In my acceptance speech, I have highlighted one or two things I can do to assist the community. These are youth empowerment, specifically, as well as human capital development in general, because youth restiveness is caused largely by joblessness. So, one of the things I intend to do is to garner support and introduce a scheme that would make Oguta people begin to enroll to become chartered accountants.”

In his oath of allegiance, Okwuosa pledged to be of the best behavior, while serving as the King’s Privy Council member.
