How being born into a religious home, my mother influenced my music – Thamarvel

Rotimi Iyanuoluwa, a.k.a Thamarvel said he lived his early life in Ikare Akoko in Ondo State and attended his primary school there. He attended his secondary school at Greater Tomorrow College, a notable college in the state, and he lived further to study philosophy at the State University. Born into a religious family, he lived his early life playing drums in church.

“From playing musical instruments in church at a very young age, I started writing musical lyrics. I always set aside a new note at the beginning of every academic session where I would write music lyrics and write fictional stories. My mother was a headmistress and a Yoruba teacher at some point, I grew up listening to fictional Yoruba stories from my mother and this always helped my imagination to compose stories and even write lyrics.

“I’m mostly influenced by the things around him, the environment, people’s stories and even his own stories. It is evident in his music that he’s an indigenous storyteller”, he said,

Regardless of how interested he was in music, Thamarvel explained that he was too shy to listen to his voice coming from speakers because he was a kid who grew up with a voice sounding older than his look. He could recall that his mother paid for his studio session twice when he was in university but he didn’t record any song. He kept on writing music lyrics and he summoned up the courage to record his first song in 2019 after his NYSC year in Jos, Plateau State. So we can as well say that his musical career started in Jos.

After releasing a few singles during his first year into music, he decided to drop an EP titled “Better At Love Letter”, produced and recorded right in his home studio by Noble Icon, one of the notable music engineers in Jos. He worked with some music heads like Fangz and so many artists in Jos.

In 2020, Thamarvel’s manager as at then “Zoe”, he said introduced him to Classiq, one of the top artists in the North and they made his first smash record “Simple Life”. This single gave Thamarvel a lot of recognition in the North and a reasonable start-off point in another part of the country. The song has its uniqueness from the Yoruba and Hausa lyrical mix. From that point, Thamarvel realized that the time for the album was near.

Towards the end of 2020, he dropped his first album titled “Untold”, he worked with the likes of Milez, Noble Icon, other artists and sound engineers to make the album a success.

Thamarvel is notable for his Yoruba and English lyrical mix, storytelling with music, real-life related matters and love. He motivates with his music and he finds it easy to discuss life-pressing issues with his music. He does an Afro-pop Genre.

Some of his popular songs include Simple Life featuring Classiq, Happy Day featuring Slimcase, Foreplay featuring Magnito and Classiq, and Most Wanted featuring Psycho YP.

He has 2 albums and 2 EPs to his name in the industry: Epiphany The EP, Untold The Album, Better At Love Letters The EP and How It All Started the Album.

Thamarvel explained that he does most of his recordings in his home studio, he finds peace there and it’s always easy for him to go deep into his imagination which is always important for him during his creative process. His producer “Milez” spends a lot of time with him making new beats that suit their pattern and making it easy for Thamarvel to write and record. On a good day and in a good mood, he recalled that they sometimes record 3 to 4 songs in a day.

Thamarvel started holding his concerts in 2021 and he has been doing that nonstop. He hosts his concerts every end of the year tagged EMBER FEST, inviting notable artists to share the stage with him while they entertain people. He uses his music as a tool to discuss reality issues and motivating topics. He also sings about love when he pleases, his “BALL” album was all centred around love.

Thamarvel said enjoys his own company more than anyone does. He spends most of his time “outside music space” alone, and he sometimes enjoys going to the beach to reflect. He has decided to keep his relationship status private.

Thamarvel said he is an individual who gives back to society as much as he receives and he believes that giving is an essential sacrifice. He does giveaways at random times on the social media page and he also gives to people even off social media. In Thamarvel’s words, “The real life is actually outside social media”.

Thamarvel said he is spending time in his own space outside social media to experience evident growth. No doubt, between the time he started his music career to the time he gained his recognition, he has been growing and evolving but he still feels that he is yet to get to his actual musical element and the best way he can do that is in isolation.

Music can be financially demanding sometimes if not all the time. This is one of the challenges he tackles as a Solo artist and an independent one. Another challenge is getting features with some artists in the industry is sometimes difficult especially if you do not have the right connection.
