Experts have said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Safety Engineering can effectively curb accidents and the risk of losses by proffering decision support, incident prediction and prevention.

This was said at the investiture ceremony of the fourth National Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), Oluseun Faluyi, in Lagos.

Keynote Speaker, Adeyemi Adetunji, an engineer, stated that the engineering profession revolves around proffering solutions to improve the quality of life and living, noting however that poor regulatory environment, and harsh socio-economic situations plague the overall performance in the engineering sector.

Addressing the state of safety engineering in the country, he stated that Nigeria is repeatedly hindered by procrastination.

“We have seen the birth of many visions, including vision 2010, 2020 and so on but our major challenge has been the problem of implementation,” he said.

Educating the attendees on safety engineering, he said: “Safety engineering is simply designing workplaces to reduce accidents and to assure safety in the use of systems, assets, projects and all engineering things to reduce or eliminate the risk of losses to the barest minimum.”

He faults the incessant cases of building collapse and road mishaps on negligence and complicity, saying, “The solution to curb this menace has been proffered. The problem is that these solutions are being ignored.”

President, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Margaret Oguntola, said that Artificial intelligence has gained prominence, effectively tackling some of the issues that plague the economy.

For this reason, Oguntola posits that AI is a veritable tool to enhance performance in the engineering sector and predicts that it will aid in achieving security in Nigeria.

The inaugurated chairman, Faluyi said that the sector is saddled with the responsibility of promoting safety practices to safeguard lives and properties in Nigeria and will ensure that his tenure is committed to actualising it.
