…as CAAF24 urges technology driven solution against climate change
As part of ongoing effort to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal, the federal government has mapped out strategies aimed at establishing 1000 compressed natural gas centres (CNG) before the end of the year across the country.
The Head Media of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas initiative (PCNGI), Mrs Taiwo Fashipe made this known in Abuja at a joint press conference on the forthcoming Climate Action Africa forum (CAAF 24) themed: “Green economies, brighter futures- innovating and investing in Africas climate -smart development.” billed to hold in Lagos between 17th to 19th of this year.
She disclosed that 31 CNG centers spread have already been put in place in Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan adding that by May 29, the centers would be increased to 45 centers.
Calling on vehicle owners to brave the option of converting their cars to CNG at a cost ranging from N300,000 to N500,000, she disclosed that her outfit is partnering with the Nigeria Army and the private sector in training technicians and engineers to achieve their objective.
She noted: “We are also trying to encourage Nigerians to come and convert their cars to CNG. So part of what we are trying to provide the awareness to convert their cars to CNG.
“We already have a partnership with the Nigeria Army where they have given us over 30 of their fleets to convert to CNG. We are training their engineers and technicians to convert the other vehicles to CNG. Part of the goal is to have enough convention centres within Nigeria and also sustain the CNG buses initiatives.
Executive Director and Co-convener of CAAF24, Grace Oluchi explained that the conference is not just a clarion call to action, but a gathering of minds and spirits committed to safeguarding the African continent from Climate Change.
She noted: “It is our proof that when we come together with intent, purpose, and partnership, we can achieve our goals and make a lasting impact not only for the future but for our present.
“CAAF24 is a platform for collaboration, a space where we can share best practices, forge
partnerships, and develop a united African voice on climate action.
“This initiative arose from a call to action.We need to find, innovate, and invest in real solutions that ensure the sustainability of livelihoods in farming communities like the one I grew up in.
“This will safeguard the lives and livelihoods of our mothers, fathers,and children in vulnerable communities. CAAF is an event that crystallizes our shared aspirations and dedication to combating climate change.
“We also have an invitation to investors from across the world to ensure tangible investments can be made in products and services that can turn the tide in our favor.”
