Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu’s wife harp on peaceful co-existence for nation-building

Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State deputy governor
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and wife of the governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, urged Nigerians to pray and work to ensure peace in the state and Nigeria.

They spoke at this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration held at the State House, with the theme “Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people.”

The deputy governor said that without peace, there could not be development and neither would the people be able to worship God adequately nor go to mosques or churches.

He said it is the reason they should pray for leaders to enable them to administer the country aright.

Sanwo-Olu’s wife, on her part, said the theme was particularly instructive as it placed emphasis on the fact that one could not become a leader without being Faithful, Available and Teachable (FAT).

“Almighty Allah rewarded Prophet Ibrahim with a leadership position after he passed the test of being faithful to God’s command, being available to carry out the instruction, and having a teachable heart that is receptive to learning.

“As we bask in the euphoria of this celebration, let us be reminded of the obligation on us to be FAT in the Lord and also pass this on to our children so much so that they are made to know and appreciate the need to equally be faithful to Allah’s command,” she said.

“According to the Quranic text, when Prophet Ibrahim asked if the covenant of leadership was also for his descendants, the Lord responded: ‘My covenant does not embrace the wrong-doers.’ This surely points in the direction that we all will be rewarded based on our deeds either good or bad.

“This should, therefore, serve as a consistent reminder to be above board in terms of our relationship with Allah, and also embrace peace, unity and honesty, as we interface with people.

“Let us also continue to remember our leaders and dear country in prayers, and be faithful to our civic obligations,” the governor’s wife added.

Meanwhile, the Chief Imam of DaaruNaim Central Mosque, Sheik Imran Abdul Mojeed Eleha, urged leaders not to create laws that are not people-friendly but those in line with godly deeds and God’s will.

The cleric said there must not be double standards in the application of laws while the citizens should be law abiding.

He also said that leaders must work for the good of the people so that they would be remembered for good.
