Gunmen kill Zamfara lawmaker in Katsina

Gunmen have shot dead a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Mohammed Ahmed. The Guardian learnt that Ahmed was killed on Tuesday night about 10.30p.m. on Sheme–Funtua road in Katsina State.

Ahmed was reportedly travelling from his Zamfara base to Funtua Local Council to pass the night before continuing his journey on Wednesday.

The lawmaker was killed hours after key politicians in Zamfara defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with Governor Bello Matawalle.

The House of Assembly Clerk, Saidu Anka, confirmed the incident to newsmen yesterday. Police spokesperson in the state, SP Gambo Isah, also confirmed the incident to The Guardian yesterday afternoon.

His words: “The incident happened yesterday (Tuesday) around 22.30hours in the night. The man was coming from Zamfara to Funtua. He wanted to spend the night in Funtua and later take off in the morning to reduce the stress of the journey.

“Suddenly, he met a road block. Other vehicles were stopped because the bandits used logs to block the road. When he saw the logs, he tried to reverse. But the bandits opened fire on the vehicle and got him in the neck. He died on the spot. Later, our men came and opened the road for motorists to pass.”

He disclosed that the police were deploying mobile police officers and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the area to prevent recurrence.
