Gunmen kill soldier, injure three in Rivers

A soldier has been killed while three others are injured by gunmen that attacked troops in Asari-Toru council of Rivers State.

The Guardian gathered that the gunmen, numbering over five, ambushed the soldiers at the boundary between the Asari-Toru and the Emohua councils of the state.


The gunmen were said to have fled after the attack while four injured soldiers were taken to the military hospital in Port Harcourt.

At the time of filing this story, one of the injured military officers was confirmed dead while three others were in critical conditions.


Chairman of Akuku-Toru council, Rowland Sekibo, while confirming the incident, said the soldiers were attacked unawares in the early hours of Sunday.

During a visit to the emergency unit of the military hospital, the injured soldiers were sighted receiving medical attention, while other officers gathered outside discussing.

The Army spokesman at the Six Division, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Ekeocha, failed to respond to calls by this reporter.
