The Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN), has asked the Enugu State government to pay N45 million compensation to two traders over the demolition of their shops in Enugu State.

In a petition addressed to the Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, yesterday, the traders, Sani Na Dada and Lawal Ayavgar, whose shops were recently demolished at the Goat Market (New Artisan) in Enugu, lamented that they used their life savings to get allocations and built shops at the market in the last 15 years.

The petition, signed by CRRAN President, Olu Omotayo, disclosed that the traders had experienced mental torture and hardship since the incident, adding: “Na Dada built 10 shops for his businesses in the market and with the demolition of the market, he lost over N25 million, while Lawan said he had eight shops and lost over N22 million investments in the demolished market.”

The CRRAN, which decried the state government’s action of repossessing the market without compensating their original owners, explained that by virtue of Section 43 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), every citizen of the country has the right to acquire and own immovable property anywhere in Nigeria.
