Group flays Onaiyekan on Tinubu’s inauguration

John Cardinal Onaiyekan
A civil society group, Congress for Rights Of Yoruba Nationalities (CROYN), has decried a comment by Emeritus Catholic Archbishop, John Onaiyekan, seeking stoppage of the inauguration of the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying it was unexpected of his status as a leading religious leader and an elder-statesman with callings to promote religious unity, national stability and peace, rather than heightening tension and engaging in subtle provocation.

The group, in a statement by its National President, Abiodun Fanoro and General Secretary, Tunde Aiyenumelo, noted that the comment had also inadvertently given him out as one of the promoters of interim government come May 29, 2023

The group said if Onaiyekan could deploy what he believed was a lacuna in the country’s constitution for not providing for the conclusion of election petitions before inauguration, he ought to have also condemned the unconstitutional interim government plot, which they claimed it was obvious he supported, because there could not be a vacuum from May 29.

“We totally believe that the revered cleric has the constitutional and democratic right to belong to any of the registered political parties or cast his vote for any of the presidential candidates apart from Bola Tinubu…

His comment appears as a continuation of the anti-Tinubu and anti-All Progressives Congress (APC) plot by a few but powerful Christian leaders who through hate sermons and prophecies did everything to mobilse the Christiandom against Tinubu, but failed,” the statement read.

The group, which questioned the moral uprightness of the retired Catholic priest, sought to know why he failed to canvass the same stance against the swearing-in of all former presidents and whether he would have mounted a fericious opposition if the person to be inaugurated was a Christian or if Tinubu had not settled for a same-faith ticket…”

“We humbly admonish our revered Archbishop to join patriots like Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalam Abubakar, as well as former President Goodluck Jonathan, in their peace campaign and call on the judiciary to be diligent and ensure fairness and justice to all concerned in the election petitions”.
