Group empowers 2,500 inmates in Lagos, Osun, Ebonyi

A non-governmental organisation, Inmates Educational Foundation, has empowered over 2,500 inmates in Lagos, Osun, and Ebonyi states through its educational programmes.

Executive Director, Alabidun Mahfuz Mudathir, disclosed this during the launch of a refurbished 100-seater classroom equipped with teaching and learning aids at the Goron Dutse Custodian Centre, Kano.

He said the milestone marked a significant step in the organisation’s mission to empower inmates through education, adding that education is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for rehabilitation and reintegration in prison settings.

“It helps inmates acquire skills, build self-esteem, and develop a positive outlook. It enables them to become productive citizens upon their release. The organisation has a track record, having impacted over 2,500 inmates in Lagos, Osun, and Ebonyi states,” he said.

Mudathir said the Kano prison education project, the first of its kind in Kano after decades, aims to provide sustainable and adaptable education to inmates. He said the organisation has also deployed over 30 well-trained teachers, and provided 20 General Certificate Examination and West African Examination Certificate (GCE and WAEC) forms to support the inmates’ educational journey.

Mudathir expressed gratitude to the funders: Nigeria Youth Future Funds, and Leap Africa, and acknowledged the dedication of the Kano State volunteers’ team, led by Abubakar Isa.

He urged the inmates to embrace the opportunity with enthusiasm and dedication, emphasising that education is the key to unlocking their potential and a brighter future.

Mudathir reiterated the organisation’s commitment to empowering inmates’ lives through education.
