A justice and human rights advocacy group, Sterling Law Centre, has expressed concern over the shrinking civic space under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the recent arrest and threat of prosecution of peaceful protesters that rallied against the rising cost of food and the general high cost of living in Nigeria.
In a statement, signed by its Communications Officer, Funke Olukayode, the advocacy group said: “The right to peaceful protest is a fundamental cornerstone of any democratic society. It is disheartening to witness the Nigerian government’s assault on this basic right of its citizens.
“We strongly condemn the unwarranted arrest and charges brought against these protesters, who were merely voicing their legitimate concerns. We call upon the Nigerian government to immediately release all detained protesters and drop all charges against them.”
The group, which noted that the recent reintroduction of the bill to regulate the activities of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Nigeria is equally distressing, added: “Sterling Law Centre firmly believes that NGOs play a pivotal role in protecting the civic space and promoting the rights and well-being of citizens. The proposed bill poses a grave threat to the invaluable contributions of NGOs that strive to address societal issues and ensure accountability.
“We join the chorus of voices across Nigeria in calling for the complete rejection of this bill in the House of Representatives. Such a bill only serves to undermine the rights and freedoms that Nigerians hold dear.”
“ Sterling Law Centre will ardently stand alongside countless other Nigerians, utilising all lawful means available, to resist any attempt to stifle the commendable activities of NGOs in protecting the civic space in our beloved nation.
“The Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must recognise that a vibrant and unencumbered civil society is essential for fostering a just and democratic society. Instead of suppressing dissent, we urge the Nigerian government to engage in meaningful dialogue with its citizens, as collaboration is key to addressing pressing issues faced by the country.”
