Golden Globes Celebrate Oppenheimer’s Success at the Box Office

Golden Globe celebrates Oppenheimer winning the best drama at the Hollywood’s annual awards season, the blockbuster of 2023, clinched multiple Golden Globes.


Cillian Murphy, the Irish actor, took home the Best Male Actor award for his compelling portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the film which was centered on the development of the atomic bomb.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer also secured the Best Drama title, with Nolan himself receiving the accolade for Best Director. Adding to the triumph, Robert Downey Jr. was recognized as the Best Male Supporting Actor.

Indigenous actor Lily Gladstone stole the spotlight by winning Best Actress in a Drama Film for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

The revamped awards ceremony, following a diversity and ethics scandal in 2021, brought together Hollywood legends such as Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, and Jodie Foster on the red carpet.

In the television category, the drama series “Succession” earned the title of Best Television Drama and swept the top acting awards for its final season. Kieran Culkin won Best Actor, while Australian Sarah Snook was awarded Best Actress. British actor Matthew Macfadyen received Best Supporting Actor for his role as Snook’s fictional husband.

The ceremony also featured recognition for outstanding performances in television comedies. Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri were celebrated for their roles in “The Bear,” while the road-rage saga “Beef” secured Best Actor and Actress Limited Series awards for Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.

Pop superstar Taylor Swift, nominated for Best Song, attended the ceremony, but the award went to Billie Eilish for “What Was I Made For?,” a song from the film “Barbie.” The satire on misogyny and female empowerment, directed by Greta Gerwig, made over $1 billion in ticket sales and received nine nominations.

Other winners included the French courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall,” which won Best Screenplay and Best Film Not in English, and the Japanese animated film “The Boy and the Heron,” directed by Hayao Miyazaki, which took home the award for Best Animated Film.

The Golden Globes mark the beginning of the awards season, culminating with the Oscars on March 10. The event comes after six months of strikes by actors and writers in 2023.
