President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointments of no fewer than 555 individuals to serve as Pro-Chancellors/Chairmen and members of Governing Councils for 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria.

The decision follows President Tinubu’s approval of a list of nominees selected by the Ministry of Education, an advertorial signed by the Ministry of Education’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, showed.

It added that the inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils will take place on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission (NUC), 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja.

“Both events will commence at 9:00 am daily,” Walson-Jack stated.

The Guardian reports that the latest appointments come 11 months after President Tinubu dissolved the councils and transferred the power to supervise the institutions to the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Also, the education ministry’s announcement comes just days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to embark on another strike, potentially disrupting the academic calendar and causing further setbacks in the country’s higher education sector.

On Tuesday, ASUU decried the Federal Government’s delay in appointing Governing Councils for federal universities, criticising what they described as the nonchalant attitude of the Tinubu-led administration towards academic matters in federal universities.

During a briefing at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), ASUU also criticised the 35 per cent salary increment for professors and the 25 per cent salary increment for other academics in the university system.
