Four persons died while 12 others sustained injuries, yesterday, in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Eyewitnesses told The Guardian that the accident occurred at 9 a.m in Oniworo, Fidiwo village in Ewekoro local government area of Ogun State.
It was gathered that a fully loaded commercial bus heading to Lagos rammed into a diesel tanker.
Confirming the accident, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun Sector Command, Florence Okpe, said: “Two vehicles were involved; a Mazda bus with registration number APP111XM, and a HOWO tanker that had no registration number on it.”
She explained that 16 persons were involved, which comprise 13 male adults and three female adults. According to her, a total of 12 persons have been injured; nine male adults and three female adults.
She said: “Four deaths were recorded from the crash, all male adults. The suspected causes of the crash were speed and loss of control. The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere and Idera Hospital Sagamu while bodies of the dead were deposited at FOS Ipara.”
In a statement, Okpe said: “The Sector Commander FRSC Ogun Sector Command cautions motorists on speed violation and commiserated with the families of the victims as well as enjoined them to contact FRSC Ogunmakin for more information about the crash.”
IN a related development, no fewer than eight persons have lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred along the Ondo-Ore Expressway at Bagbe in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, while many others sustained various degrees of injury.
MEANWHILE, the Oyo State Police Command, yesterday, reaffirmed commitment to protect citizens of the state.
In a statement made available to journalists, by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, the command said it would forestall future abduction incidents along Onigarri axis of Lagos/Ibadan expressway and other adjoining routes.
For a couple of days, abductors have been having field days along the expressway, leading to commuters and motorists avoiding the road.
The PPRO said:” In a bid to forestall future abduction incidents along Onigarri axis of Lagos/Ibadan expressway and other adjoining routes, the Commissioner of Police has emplaced proactive security measures to ensure that the nefarious activities of these hoodlums are nipped in the bud in coordinated corporation with adjoining State Commands.
