The fashion industry has the potential to be a huge revenue source for Nigeria. This can only be done if the Federal Government, and other tiers of government take deliberate steps to create an enabling environment for the industry to thrive.
The founder and Creative Director of You and I Fashion, Abinusawa Funmilola, stated this in Lagos. During the unveiling of the brand’s new collection of dinner gowns.
Factors that can help the fashion industry grow
She spoke on ways the government could boost the industry. Additionally, she mentioned that leaders at various levels should put necessary infrastructure and facilities in place. Such as reliable electricity and helping players in the industry to procure modern manufacturing facilities. She added that doing this would significantly benefit designers and manufacturers. And also translate to wealth for the nation in the long run.

“Establishing fashion schools and vocational training programmes can help to cultivate new talents and provide designers with the skills needed to succeed. Additionally, creating financial support mechanisms, such as grants and low-interest loans, can help designers start and grow their businesses.” Funmilola said.
“Also, promoting Nigerian fashion through international trade missions and cultural exchanges can enhance global recognition and market access for Nigerian designers,” she added.
She emphasised that if the factors listed above were made available, fashion designers in the country would not only match the performance of their counterparts abroad but surpass them in terms of creativity.
What they stand to gain by investing in the fashion industry
“Creating and facilitating access to larger and more lucrative markets allows for greater exposure and opportunities for collaboration with global brands. Secondly, infrastructure and resources in developed countries often support high-quality production and innovation.”
“Additionally, designers abroad benefit from more robust networks and funding opportunities, which are limited in Nigeria. The presence of established fashion weeks and industry events in global fashion capitals abroad has also helped them to provide greater visibility and credibility. Nigeria should do the same.” She added.
Furthermore, she mentioned other challenges which include limited access to financing and investment. Also, the need for more robust intellectual property protections to safeguard designers’ creations from counterfeiting.
